So, On3 recruiting guru Joe Tipton reported earlier this week that this Tuesday (March 31) could be a possible commitment date for Tyran Stokes, the No. 1-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, who has been a top Kansas target for more than a year.
Is there anything we can learn about what that date might mean for the looming decision on Kansas coach Bill Self’s plate, to return to the Jayhawks for another season or retire after 23 years leading the program?
Perhaps.
Most analysts, including Tipton, believe that the race for Stokes is down to KU and Kentucky, with Oregon also in the mix.

And if Stokes is ready to announce his choice but also waiting until Tuesday, where he’ll be one of the featured players at the McDonald’s All-American game in Glendale, Arizona, maybe we’re getting some news from Self on Monday.
It seems to be a safe bet that Stokes would not fully commit to KU until he knew what Self’s plans for next season were. So, could there be some behind-the-scenes planning in place there?
Perhaps like this: Self tells Stokes what he’s doing and that he’ll announce it on Monday. Stokes says, cool, I’ll announce on Tuesday.
If that’s the case, I definitely think Kansas could be the pick and Self could be returning. Talk about a big time week for a fan base that's been on pins and needles about the future of the program since the Jayhawks' season ended with a loss to St. John's in Round 2 of the NCAA Tournament last weekend.
If Stokes, a dynamic 6-7, 225-pound forward from Rainier Beach High by way of Louisville, was planning to pick Kentucky, why wait?
Not only would Stokes not need to wait for a Self decision, but, in that hypothetical scenario, it also seems unlikely that Self would be overly concerned with the kid’s timing.
This is all speculation, of course. Although I continue to lean toward a Self return to KU for the 2026-27 season, I do think it has been close throughout and believe he’s spent much of the past week undecided and trying to figure out the best move, with family and perhaps even doctors weighing in to help him.
Self could announce Monday and Stokes could still pick Kentucky on Tuesday. But given that KU has been viewed as the leader for Stokes for quite a while, the two timelines meshing nicely would make a lot of sense.
If that’s in fact what happens, talk about a great week for Jayhawks everywhere.
Not only would they be getting their Hall-of-Fame head coach back, but they also would be getting yet another No. 1-ranked prospect who they can build next season’s team around.
With Stokes in the mix, KU's incoming class — already a Top-10 group by nearly every recruiting outlet — would be in contention, if not the favorite, to be the No. 1-ranked class in all of college basketball for 2026.
Beyond that, the addition of Stokes, one would think, could make it awfully intriguing for most of KU’s eligible returning players (if not all of them) to want to join the fun and come back for another season themselves.
We’ll see how it all plays out. But, with the Final Four now nearly set and almost a week before any more NCAA Tournament action, it’s sure looking like this could be a busy week for Kansas basketball, perhaps right out of the gate.
