Tracking JD6's status, another golf record & volleyball moves up a spot

3 min read

The status of Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels will remain a hot topic this week, as the Jayhawks prepare to head to Stillwater, Oklahoma to take on an Oklahoma State team that knocked off Kansas State last Friday night.

Daniels missed his third game of the season — and second in a row — because of a lingering back issue that first surfaced in preseason camp and flared back up before kickoff of KU’s loss at Texas.

Details about the injury have been tough to come by and there appears to be no known timeline for Daniels’ return.

KU coach Lance Leipold said Monday that Daniels did not practice on Monday. Leipold also said he had not yet received an update on the KU starter this week.

After falling to Texas with Jason Bean at the helm, the Jayhakws bounced back in a big way last weekend, knocking off UCF, 51-22, in Lawrence.

Bean had the entire week to prepare for the start — his third of the season — and he looked much more comfortable and poised as a result.

Bean now has started 16 games in his three-year KU career and seems headed toward adding another start this weekend at OSU.

Daniels, meanwhile, has made 21 starts during his four years with the program.

While that will continue to be at the top of many to-do lists for those who cover Kansas football, here’s a look at what else we’re planning to dive into the rest of the week.

• KU golfer Jordan Rothman, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa, won her first collegiate tournament over the weekend and did it by setting a 54-hole school record. Watch for a story later this week that takes a look at how she did it and where her love of golf first took off.

• The KU men’s and women’s basketball teams are now full-steam ahead with preparations for the 2023-24 season. We’ll have another look back at some of what we learned at last week’s Late Night in the Phog and we should see where KU is picked in the preseason Big 12 standings along with which Jayhawks earn any preseason individual honors.

• Despite dropping back-to-back matches at No. 8 Texas last week, the KU volleyball team actually moved up a spot in this week’s AVCA poll, to No. 16. Kansas enters the second third of the Big 12 season at 12-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Jayhawks have just one match this week — 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Oklahoma at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena — and then will have eight days before their next match at TCU.

• We’re also planning to unveil a couple of new weekly features at the site — similar to Moments That Popped and Monday Morning Wheaties — which will highlight the top performances and best quotes of the past week in Kansas athletics.

All of that and plenty more as it happens will be in the works at Wave the Wheat this week, so be sure to check back often and tell your favorite KU friend that we’re here.

We’re still running our half-price special for a limited time — $29.95 gets you an entire year of Wave the Wheat content at R1S1. In addition to our subscriber-exclusive stories and content, subscribers now have access to our comments section after each story.
